Inviting college students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church, our FOCUS missionaries host large group outreach events, weekly Bible studies and offer one-on-one mentoring with student leaders.
2016-20176 Focus Missionaries
I grew up in New York and studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. When I got to college I knew that I was going through the motions in a lot of ways because my religion lived in a neat little box away from the rest of my life, so I went on a FOCUS mission trip to Honduras the summer after my freshman year to gain some perspective by seeing my religion in a new context. There I witnessed violence, extreme poverty, and suffering.
I was praying in the chapel one night asking "Why? Where are You in this suffering? Why don't you care?" And I just felt Jesus speak to my heart telling me "I do care. I joined in their suffering. Will you?"
It has taken a while but I have come to understand that through that experience Jesus was really calling me to be with people. Not just to be with people in the good, happy, and easy situations but the broken, embarrassing, and hard situations. It is a call to love without all the walls of cynicism I had built to protect myself from the vulnerability necessary to really love. These walls have been slow in coming down, but it has brought so much more joy and fruit to all of my relationships. I have been blessed with the opportunity to live out this call to love and to share how a relationship with Jesus changes everything (a dramatic statement I know, but SO true) here at Michigan Tech.
Please keep me in your prayers! God bless!
