Sister Theresa Marie Moore’s life changed after hearing the vocation story of a Sister in Indiana who had been an electrical engineer. She said to herself, “Whoa, you could be an engineer and then a Sister? That’s really cool! And that is when I started being open to a vocation to the Religious Life.”
Sr. Theresa Marie, a 2001 Michigan Tech and St. Al’s alumna, worked as a structural engineer in the bridge and manufactured housing industries for almost 10 years after graduation. She professed her perpetual vows as a sister of the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate on October 13, 2018.
College was the first time Sr. Theresa Marie experienced a vibrant community of Catholics her own age who had chosen to be there. She was active at St. Al’s in the music ministry and as a lector and part of the Respect Life Council and other small groups and Bible studies.
Sr. Theresa Marie’s faith remained an important part of her life after college, but discerning her vocation to the religious life took some time.
Her advice to anybody discerning a vocation? “Daily prayer is very important. Make it the first thing you put in your schedule every day so that it does not get pushed out by a busy schedule. Also, find a spiritual director to help guide you and give perspective.”
She had no experience with the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, based in New York, but she became intrigued while stumbling across their website and planned a visit. During the visit the time spent with the Sisters at communal prayer, in recreation, and in sharing God's love with people while visiting them in their homes, it was apparent that this was where God wanted her.
